Rethinking Education: Five new ways for remote learning - Article

At Amor Classroom (A More Beautiful World Classroom), we believe that in order to improve the quality and coverage of education and the overall well-being of our communities, we need to rethink education. Over the COVID-19 crisis our world faces, remote learning is a big challenge for students without connectivity around the world.

The Center For Global Development (CFGD) has come with a very thoughtful approach that would allow these students to continue with their education. We hope that in the midst of this unfortunate crisis, the challenges, and the solutions that emerged from them, could serve us as a basis to start the transformation we believe education needs. Se we ensure we cover the so rich range of human talents, abilities, and learning styles we have.

Below is a summary of the five opportunities for remote learning the CFGD is suggesting:

1. Simplify curricula and modify learning goals

Use focused strategies that ensure continuity in early grade literacy and numeracy. Prioritize learning continuity for children most at risk of dropping out by including strategies to keep vulnerable populations engaged and excited about learning.

2. Make learning materials available

Safely deliver or allow families to pick up a basic package of learning materials, including books and writing materials (for example, from food distribution locations).

3. Use radio, television, and SMS to amplify learning

Use radio and TV-based programs, SMS messaging or simple phone calls upon which lessons can be built.

4. Make use of family engagement, an under-utilized resource

Encourage parental and sibling support using simple methods as engaging children in talk and answering questions, or creating simple counting and language activities as part of daily household routines.

5. Encourage outreach and support from teachers, school leaders, and districts

Follow up with families to ensure students understand available learning opportunities and maintain motivation and engagement in learning.
